More of the owls / Mais das corujas
The owls from Illustration Friday's theme "Fail" were actually done for a book cover which title is (roughly translated): "Being a mom is super good". It's about what motherhood means for some of Brazilians famous mothers and how it has affected their lives. It is published by my husband's publishing house, Matrix, and the copyrights will be donated to an organization named "Amparo Maternal", which cares for pregnant women (teenagers, single moms, abused, homeless, physical or mentally challenged and even psychopats) that otherwise would not have any assistance. My first option to illustrate this cover was Geninne, a good friend from "Blogsphere" that has the cutest (and truly maternal) work I've ever seen. But due to the short time we had to print it for free, I did it myself. Although I am a mother too, I've never been into drawing animals, birds and cute things like that, but a good cause deserves a good work, therefore I've done my best and I can say I am proud and happy to have accomplished it. "Never say never", right?
As corujas do tema "Falhar" do post "Illustration Friday" foram feitas na verdade para a capa do livro "Ser mãe é tudo de bom", que fala sobre o que a maternidade significa para algumas mães famosas aqui do Brasil e como isso afetou suas vidas. O livro é publicado pela Matrix (editora do meu marido) e os direitos autorais serão doados à "Amparo Maternal", organização que cuida de grávidas (adolescentes, mães solteiras, vítimas de violência doméstica ou estupro, com deficiências físicas ou mentais e até mesmo psicopatas) que, caso contrário, não teriam acesso à assistência nenhuma. Minha primeira opção para ilustrar a capa era a Geninne, uma boa amiga da Blogsfera, que tem o trabalho mais fofo e maternal que eu já vi. Mas com o tempo curto, e uma "brecha" da gráfica para imprimir de graça, tive que fazer eu mesma. Mesmo sendo mãe, nunca fui muito de desenhar coisas fofinhas, animais e que tais. Mas uma boa causa merece um trabalho bem feito, então mandei bala e acabei satisfeita com o resultado. "Nunca diga nunca", certo?

A New Book Cover / Uma Nova Capa de Livro

This is a cover I've done last month. The book (published by Matrix Editora) was written by an old friend of mine, Mirella Janotti, a very brave woman who endured a breast cancer without losing the sense of humour. The title could be roughly translated as "Hang on to the wig!", it is a very funny expression here in Brazil and it also refers to the fact that, while in treatment, one should count on a "friendly" wig to hide the baldness and feel better. It is a lovely book, well written, funny and inspiring, just like the author. I am very proud of my friend and honored to have been chosen to do, not only the cover, but also the inside illustrations and the graphic design.

Esta é uma capa que fiz no mês passado. O livro (publicado pela Matrix Editora) foi escrito por uma velha amiga, Mirella Janotti, uma mulher de muita coragem que enfrentou um câncer de mama sem perder a pose e o bom humor. O título, engraçadíssimo, faz alusão aos artifícios que a mulher pode lançar mão para disfarçar a inconveniente careca, conseqüência do tratamento. É um livro encantador, engraçado e cheio de otimismo, igualzinho à autora. Eu sinto orgulho de minha amiga e fiquei honrada de ter sido scolhida para fazer não só a capa, mas também as ilustrações de miolo e o projeto gráfico.

Las Vegas Wedding / Casamento em Las Vegas
This is an old illo I've done for my 2005 calendar. I was selecting wedding related illustrations for a cliente and when I saw this I found it so fresh and up-to-date. I still don't understand why Heath Ledger had to die so young! I loved "Brokeback Mountain", such a moving love story! This illo is not a portrait of him, it is just an old image I've found in one of my sketchbooks.
Ainda não consigo entender por quê o Heath Ledger morreu tão cedo! Adorei "Brokeback Mountain", achei uma linda história de amor, muito comovente. Esta ilustração não é um retrato dele, é só uma imagem que achei num dos meus cadernos de rascunho.

I am not a fan of circus... but I have a fascination for tamers and lions. Plus, I am very into patterns lately, so I thought it would be a good idea to use this theme to try some new effects. But, by the time I had to decide what was in and what was out... this illo just didn't make it.
Não sou muito fã de circo... mas tenho fascinação por domadores e leões. Além disso, ando numa fase de padronagens e texturas, então achei que seria uma boa idéia aproveitar este tema para tentar novos efeitos. Mas na hora de decidir o que fica e o que sai... esta ilustração simplesmente não me convenceu.
